In the African continent the discovery of the banjo stringed instrument was appreciated greatly by people. In the nineteenth century it was brought to America by the slaves. The tenor banjo and the banjo with five strings are the two types of string instruments that were primarily found. American as well as Irish music included these musical stringed instruments. Strings totaling to four in number are seen in the tenor banjo which is popularly used in music of the jazz genre. Earl Scruggs, Perry Bechtel and Ralph Stanley Harry Reser were players of the banjo who were most noteworthy.

Another stringed instrument was the violoncello which was also termed as the cello and comes in different sizes. Depending on the player, the instrument of a particular size could be customized. In the fifteenth century, Cremona’s Andrea Amati was the first to flaunt the cello. Pablo Casals, Yo-Yo Ma as well as Mstislav Rostropovich were a few players who have contributed to the reputation of the cello. Between the centuries 1900 and 1800 BC in Babylonia the guitar was first introduced. In the present times guitars are available in various sizes and shapes, to suit all age groups. They come in various types like the seven pedaled classical harp, the fork harp, lever harp, Celtic harp or the Irish harp. King Alfred the Great and King Henry the VII were the famous people who played the harp. Another variety in string instruments is the ukulele which comes from the guitar family but is a smaller variety. Depending upon its type it can have eight to ten strings.
